BattGrade
OBD2 adapters

Which adapter for which car and phone.

The BattGrade app reads the battery through a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter plugged into the car. Not every adapter reads every car, and not every adapter works with an iPhone. This page comes from the same catalogue as the coverage page.

At a glance

Adapters, phones and car families.

A tick means the adapter is listed for every car in that family. A family is a group of cars the app reads the same way.

Cheap adapters often can't read EV batteries

Low-cost ELM327 clones often lack what battery reads need: 29-bit CAN on Volkswagen Group MEB cars and the Zoe Ph2, or custom flow control on the Leaf, the Zoe Ph1 and Stellantis cars. Use an adapter listed for your car.

Hyundai, Kia and Genesis cars need neither, so ELM327 clones generally read them too.

What ELM327, STN and CAN mean

On iPhone, use a Bluetooth LE adapter

On iPhone, use a Bluetooth LE adapter such as the OBDLink CX. OBDLink MX+ support on iPhone is coming. Bluetooth Classic adapters such as the Konnwei KW902 work on Android only.

Hyundai, Kia and Genesis

Hyundai, Kia and Genesis cars need neither 29-bit CAN nor custom flow control, so good ELM327 adapters such as the Vgate vLinker FS read them too.

Sometimes. Hyundai, Kia and Genesis cars generally answer ELM327 clones. The Leaf, Stellantis e-CMP cars, the Zoe and Volkswagen Group MEB cars need 29-bit CAN or custom flow control, which many clones lack. Use an adapter listed for your car.
No. Every car the app reads today has the standard OBD2 port, and the adapter plugs straight into it.
The BattGrade app only sends read-only requests and blocks any other request before it reaches the adapter. Nothing is written to the car, no fault code is cleared and no control unit is reset.
